Winter squash are the late-growing, less symmetrical, odd-shaped, rough or warty kinds, small to medium in size, but with long-keeping qualities and hard rinds, are usually called winter squash. Sow the seeds 1 inch deep, 2 foot apart, in rows 4 to 5 feet apart, in a sunny location of your garden. Work plenty of compost into the soil before planting and fertilize monthly during the growing season. Mulch with black plastic to help retain moisture in the soil and control weeds. Harvest the squash when the skin is tough and cannot be pierced with your fingernail.
