~Yarrow Anthea~
Yarrow - There are many different native and cultivated varieties of yarrow. Achillea commonly grows one to three feet tall and blooms from June to September. Individual flowers are about one-quarter inch in diameter and form together as a cyme (flat cluster), typically several inches in diameter. Shades of white, yellow, red, and pink are common flower colors, while the feathery or fern like foliage can range from true green to silver.
Environment and Care
Achillea is cold hardy to Zone 3 and is equally tolerant of heat. Yarrow grows best in well-drained soils and full sun. Shade and/or soils too rich or moist may reduce plant sturdiness and flowering.
Yarrow spreads by seed as well as rhizomes and can be quiet invasive. To prevent spreading by seed, flower heads should be cut after blooming. Cutting back flower clusters to the lateral branches also promotes increased flowering. After lateral flowers are done blooming the flower stems can be cut back to the basal foliage. Root pruning is also recommended to contain rampant growth and can be accomplished by splitting every two to four years in spring or fall.
Yarrow is resistant to most pest and disease problems. Animals do not tend to eat yarrow, but may occasionally eat the flowers. The foliage has been found to repel insects.
Uses
Yarrow is an herb that has many medicinal uses both internally and externally. It can be used to stop bleeding, to induce sweating, to induce digestion, and to ward off bacterial infection to name a few. If using the foliage as an herb, the best time to harvest is before the plant flowers. Flowers have the strongest herbal qualities. Both foliage and flower can be used as a food source, in salads, as a tea, in flavoring beer, or as a spice.
Being very aromatic, yarrow can also be used in potpourri or in dried flower arrangements. Color can be retained by cutting flower stems when individual flowers are just beginning to open and placing them upright in a small amount of water, letting the flowers dry as the water evaporates.
