Nigella "Love in a Mist"

Annual. Old-fashioned favorite for fresh or dried flowers. Hardy with branches, produces typical flowers with color varying from white to pink and blue. 1-2" blooms clothed in a lacy netting of greenery. Blue, mauve, pink, purple, and Unpicked flowers form delightful balloon-shaped seed pods. Moderately fertile soil. Ht. 12-24". This Love-in-a-Mist blooms in summer, but the seedpods that follow are the main attraction, arising in fall and ideal for both fresh and dried arrangements! The plants are uniform, fuss-free, and very free-blooming, reaching 2 to 3 feet tall and 8 inches wide in the sunny garden. Annual. After the jewel-colored, Bachelor's Button-like flowers fade away, horned seedpods appear. Use the delicate, purple-striped pods in dried arrangements for an airy effect. Easy-to-grow plants bloom and form seedpods in late spring. Days to Sprout 7 - 14. Plant seeds outdoors 2 weeks before the last frost in well-drained - even sandy - soil enriched compost. Where winters are mild, seeds may be planted outdoors in the fall. Sow seeds, cover lightly with soil and keep moist until seedlings are established. DRYING Cut stems after seedpods form. Wrap a rubber band around small bundle of stems and hang heads down in a dark, airy place until dry.
