Larkspur "American Flag"
This is a Botanical Interests 750 mg. packet.
Annual, Red (actually rose), white, and blue 1/4"-1/2" flowers densely packed on tall stems. Larkspur blooms in cool weather, from mid-spring to early summer. Some blooming will occur until the first fall frost, but heaviest blooming occurs during the cooler periods. Full Sun, 3' - 5' tall, 6" - 12" wide.
The Bodger Seed Co. of El Monte, CA., first planted a 17 acre field of red, white, and blue larkspur in the shape of the American flag in 1942 after Pearl Harbor was attacked. In 2002, as a gift to the city of Lompoc, CA., they have recreated this tradition to pay tribute to the heroes and victims of September 11th., 2001. In most areas, this larkspur blend will bloom around flag day. This seed packet is alsodedicated to those heroes and victims of September 11th., 2001. This vivid blend of larkspur will add beauty and a patriotic flair to your garden!.
A cool location in full sun. Like many members of the Ranunculaceae family, Larkspur prefers moist, well drained soil. Also prefers a slightly alkaline soil. Keep well watered. Tall flower stalks may need to be staked.
SOW OUTSIDE: Early spring, as soon as soil can be worked (2-4 weeks before last frost). INSIDE: 6-8 weeks before last frost. Does not transplant well. Either start outdoors or sow into peat pots and plant directly into soil. This will minimize root shock. Larkspur seed requires dark to germinate; make sure seeds are covered sufficiently or
seeds will not germinate. Seedlings will emerge in approximately 10-15 days. An excellent cut or dried flower. Use air dry method for drying. A backdrop plant. Fits well in front of a fence or wall.
