~Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium albidum)~
Blue-eyed Grass is also known as White Blue-eyed Grass which is the official vernacular for this species..
This is a herbaceous plant, it is a perennial which can reach 20inches. The flower stems are unbranched and usually not longer than the leaves. There is a mat of fibers at the base.
Leaves: This plant has basal leaves only. Leaves can be as wide as 0.25inches.
The flowers have 6 Regular Parts and are up to 1 inches. They are white to blue with yellow centers. Blooms first appear in early spring and continue into late spring. The three petals and three almost identical sepals have narrow pointed tips. This species usually has two clusters of flowers on each stem each cluster emerging from two spathes.
Habitat: Fields, glades and open woods.
Range: Most of eastern North America.
Grass Blue Eyed
A delightful little Iris relative from the coast of California. Tufts of narrow, upright bluish-green leaves lend a casual air to the flower bed or rock garden. Resembles an ornamental grass until constellations of bluish-purple star shaped flowers appear for several weeks in spring. Excellent for wildflower areas. Considered an annual in USDA zones 1-4.

Botanical Interests Perennial that blooms in Summer and prefers Full Sun, growing to 15" tall, 12" wide in zones 7-10. Pony Tails is really excellent for containers/large pots but also can be planted in large groupings for a dramatic effect. Plumes can be cut and dried for use in winter decorations. Blooms first year! A very graceful plant. Culture: Prefers well drained, infertile soils. Very drought tolerant once established, but even moisture produces the most flower heads.
