Solid-green fruits have curved necks and wing-like projections, perfect for gourdcraft swans. Total length of 18-24" with an 8" bowl and unique serpentine projections. Straight necks if grown on a trellis. 125 days.

(L. siceraria) Pronounced "boo-lay." Unique hard-shelled French gourd for drying. Similar in shape to a large apple, 6-8" tall and 5-6" across. The entire gourd is covered with small warts or tooth-like bumps. Vigorous 15-35' vines. 100-120 days

~Ornamental Gourds Mix~
Ornamental runner plant produces various shapes of graceful fruits with spots, striations and speckles of various colors. Annual. Cover a trellis, arbor or fence this summer with fast-growing vines and pick an amazing variety of colorful gourds this fall. Gourds keep well for months and make wonderful decorations and crafts. Ready to pick 90 days after planting. Days to Sprout 7 - 10. Plant seeds outdoors after the last frost in soil enriched with compost or rotted manure. (Seeds can be started indoors in 3-inch peat pots 4 weeks before transplanting.) Use plastic mulch in cool climates to retain heat in the soil. For nicely shaped gourds, grow vines on a trellis or fence. (Vines will spread 10 to 15 feet.) Fertilize monthly. Water when the top 1-inch layer of soil is dry. HARVESTING Pick gourds when vines are dry. Cut - don't pull - from the vine, leaving a 1-inch handle attached. Hang in a cool, airy place to dry for 3 to 4 weeks. Dried gourds may be waxed or varnished.

~Luffa Gourd~
Luffa is a fast growing, warm climate member of the Cucurbit family that is native to India, and is also known under a wide variety of other names including Sponge Gourd, Dishcloth Gourd, Sze Qwa, Cee Gwa and others. Luffa is grown commercially in China, Taiwan, Central America, Korea, Vietnam and Japan, and also still grows wild in India today. Luffa is used not only for natural sponge production, but also food production. Luffa is the only known plant that may be used to produce natural sponges which have been found to have a positive impact on cleansing human skin and may also be used to produce an organic soap. When Luffa is harvested when young at a length of 4 to 6 inches long and yield a sweet, tasty vegetable that may be prepared similiar to okra or zucchini. The mature seeds, young flowers and young foilage of the Luffa are also edible. The Luffa plant itself is similiar to a cucumber and produces sprawling vines up to 15 to 20 feet in length. Luffa can also be sliced and utilized raw like a cucumber. Matures in about 110 days.
