Datura "Devil's Trumpet"
Native to the Southwest and Mexico, Datura is a member of the Nightshade family and related to Jimsonweeds. Now grown mainly for its showy, prolific trumpet flowers, it has been used since ancient times in sacred ceremonies and as an herb. The 7" upright flowers are a striking purple and white. Very fragrant bloom. Can be cultivated as an annual in the North and is very easily grown. The seeds take 3 to 5 weeks to sprout and should be started in damp peat moss. If started inside place in a sunny window untill all risk of frost passes. Given fiull sun or partial shade and plenty of water, they grow quickly to 36-48 in. but may not bloom the 1st year if summers are short. Easily overwintered indoors for a splendid show the following summer.
