~Dahlia "Bishop's Children~

Bishop's Children, Dahlia variabilis. Although dahlias were discovered in the 16th century by Spanish conquistadores, not until 1872 was a box of tubers sent to Holland. As its name suggests, Bishop’s Children is a seed grown descendant of Bishop of Llandaff, introduced in 1927. Striking mix of rich colors, impressive dark foliage. Half-hardy annual, 28-36" tall. Grow fabulous dark-leaved dahlias from seed. The purple-black foliage has a metallic sheen and serves as a dramatic background for the predominantly single 3 to 4 inch flowers produced on informal, bushy 4 foot plants. The mix includes shades of purple, orange, bronze, garnet and maroon. Sow seed from January to March for summer bloom. Prefers full sun. Shades of red, orange and gold flowers above dark bronzed foliage. Developed from the original 'Bishop of Llandaff' which is a real favourite among our customers as well! Prefers full sun and well drained soil. Halfhardy perennial to height 36in. and spread 18in. Sow indoors: January to April in trays of moist compost (cell trays are ideal). How to sow indoors: Sow thinly and cover seed lightly with compost. Firm down gently and cover the trays with glass or polythene. How to grow indoors: Remove the covers when seedlings appear and transplant to single 9cm (3in) pots of compost. Stand the plants outdoors for a few days In May and finally transfer to 30cm (12in) apart in the flowering position in late May. Keep plants moist and weed free at all times, particularly in containers. Average 50 seed.

~Dahlia Mix~

Ultra-bright double blooms in all the warm tones of summer brighten these sturdy little 15-inch plants all summer and into fall! Boasting shades of cream, yellow, orange, and red--many streaked or shaded with lighter tones--these blooms simply dazzle in the front of the border, in containers, along a walkway, or in the vase. The deep bronze-colored foliage adds to the show. No wonder Diablo won a Fleuroselect Medal--it has fascinating bright colors, a charming double-daisy form, and contrasting foliage that keeps the plant interesting even when not in bloom! Easy to grow from seed, this Dahlia may be started indoors 4 to 6 weeks before last anticipated frost or sown directly into the garden. It will do best in full sun and in moist, fertile, well-drained soil. After the bloom ends in fall, dig up the plant and retrieve the tuber, which can then be replanted next spring and for many more to come! Hardy in zones 9 and south (or zone 8 with winter protection); elsewhere, dig up the tuber and store in a frost-free location.
