~Alyssum Sweet Rosie O'Day~
Annual that flowers Rose-pink from Spring to frost. Full Sun, Partial Sun 2-4" tall, 6-12" wide. A sweetly scented alyssum covered with tiny rose-pink flowers that form mini-rosettes. Perfect for continuous color in rock gardens, rock walls, along a garden path, or spilling from your favorite pots. All American Selections award winner, 1961.
Alyssum prefers full sun or light shade. In too much shade, alyssum will get "leggy" and bloom poorly. Soil should be rich and well drained, but Alyssum is not picky and will withstand poor soils. WATER REQUIREMENTS: Keep soil moist to slightly dry. Will withstand drought and heat. About 4 weeks into bloom, shear back plants lightly to encourage more flowers.
Sow outside: Around last day of spring frost. In mild areas, seed can be sown in fall for winter blooming. Sow Inside: 4 weeks before last frost. Special Note: Alyssum seed requires light to germinate; either don't cover seeds at all and mist them regularly to keep them moist OR cover them very lightly so seeds can still receive light. Seedling will emerge in approximately 5-15 days. Many gardeners "dibble" transplants outside in clumps rather than transplanting individual plants. Alyssum will reseed, but the new plants often revert to taller, looser growth with less color and smaller flowers. Restart new seed every year.

CALCEOLARIA MIX
Highly prized annual produces lots of small plain "pouch" flowers about 1". Also called "pocketbook plant" Great for balconies. Calceolarius means shoemaker in Latin and describes this genus of flowers, whose shape of the lower lip reminds people of a lady slipper. This genus has 300 species and is endemic to the Americas and is most abundant in the Andes. Instead of nectar, they offer an oily substance to its pollinators. Bees, for instance, are known to use it to feed their larvae. Since the 19th century this genus is integrated in floriculture and many hybrids were created since then. Calceolaria or Slipper Flower or Slipperwort, Origin - Mexico, C. America. Habit - Small, compact Height 8-16", Spread 8-10" Leaves, Green, deeply lobed, hairy Flower - Pouch-like in loose clusters Colors - Yellow Utilization - Bedding, edging, pots Germination - 6-10 days, 55-60 F, do not cover Preculture - April, May in cool greenhouse Direct seed - Possible May Season - July until late autumn Site - Sun, part shade Soil - Moderately fertile soil, well drained Varieties: Everybody knows the colorful Calceolaria hybrids sold as indoor pot plants in spring, but the outdoor types are rarely seen in gardens. They are attractive, mostly low-growing plants smothered in golden yellow flowers long into the autumn. Seeds are dust-like and need light and quite low temperatures for germination. Press seed into the soil surface and keep it moist by gently spraying with water. The seedlings are tiny and best watered from beneath. When large enough to handle, transfer into individual pots. Healthy and compact plants are obtained in light and coolish 50-59 F conditions. In the garden, used as ground cover or edging, the Slipper Flowers attract a lot of attention. Using mulch keeps the hairy leaves tidy and also retains soil moisture.
