New in 2005! Beautiful, double, upward-facing flowers with light scent. Perfect as feature plants in containers and in a conservatory. Halfhardy perennial to height 50cm (20in). Sow indoors: January to March in pots of moist compost. How to sow indoors: Cover seed lightly with fine compost and firm in gently. Cover the pots with glass, polythene or a propagator lid and maintain at 15-20?C (60-72?F) and keep moist. How to grow indoors: Remove coverings when seedlings appear and transplant to single pots if needed. Harden off the plants outdoors for a few days in May and then move to a sheltered position in the garden. Keep moist and weed free. Flowers: June to October. Bishop's Children, Dahlia variabilis. Although dahlias were discovered in the 16th century by Spanish conquistadores, not until 1872 was a box of tubers sent to Holland. As its name suggests, Bishop?s Children is a seed grown descendant of Bishop of Llandaff, introduced in 1927. Striking mix of rich colors, impressive dark foliage. Half-hardy annual, 28-36" tall. Grow fabulous dark-leaved dahlias from seed. The purple-black foliage has a metallic sheen and serves as a dramatic background for the predominantly single 3 to 4 inch flowers produced on informal, bushy 4 foot plants. The mix includes shades of purple, orange, bronze, garnet and maroon. Sow seed from January to March for summer bloom. Prefers full sun. Shades of red, orange and gold flowers above dark bronzed foliage. Developed from the original 'Bishop of Llandaff' which is a real favourite among our customers as well!
